Master of Public Health (MPH) in Global Environmental Health

Poor environmental health conditions account for an estimated one-fifth of the overall burden of disease worldwide – the vast majority in the poorest countries. Rapid urbanization and industrialization can create financial opportunities, but they can also augment problems, such as crowding in unsafe housing lacking access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. The MPH in Global Environmental Health, a joint program of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Department of Global Health, prepares students to tackle these and other challenges. Students arrive with a commitment to improving public health in resource-poor settings and graduate with the skills they need to assume roles in designing, implementing, and evaluating programs to create healthy environments around the world.

Unique Strengths of GW’s Program
Classes equip students both to understand global environmental health hazards and to develop and implement programs to effectively mitigate them, using culturally, financially, ethically, and politically feasible approaches. Our DC location makes it easy to access some of the largest organizations funding and implementing environmental health programs globally and allows students to participate in and learn from organizations that are making a difference in the sector.

Faculty and Advising
Our faculty members have experience addressing a variety of global environmental health topics in a wide range of settings in several countries – including designing and implementing interventions to improve household water quality and sanitation; raising community awareness of high-level exposure to carbon monoxide from unvented gas stoves within informal settlements; and assessing sanitation infrastructure options for resettlement housing following natural disasters. Faculty members often share their expertise with national and international public health entities, lawmakers, agencies, NGOs, and the media, as well as with students.

Research and Professional Development
The program’s field-based practicum provides students with hands-on, relevant work experience in diverse settings, including international entities, advocacy organizations, and federal agencies. With our wealth of faculty experience, we can help students arrange field placements that suit their personal goals.

Career Preparation
Graduates will find opportunities in international organizations such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Pan American Health Organization, the World Bank, PLAN International, UNICEF, John Snow, Inc., CARE, and Water.org, as well as ministries of health and local NGOs in developing countries themselves.
