International Applicant Requirements

At GW, we are proud to cultivate a community of diverse perspectives and international backgrounds. We welcome international applicants to our degree programs for the Fall semester.

To comply with immigration requirements and university policies, international applicants are required to submit additional documentation not requested of US students. Waivers for standardized testing may not apply. An international applicant is any applicant who is a non-US citizen, requiring a Visa to travel, work, or study in the United States.

Applicants Requesting a F-1 Visa or F-1 Visa Transfer

Before being reviewed for admission, applicants must submit:

  • Official TOEFL or IELTS score meeting the SPHHS Language Proficiency Requirement
  • Official GRE scores
  • A Course-By-Course Transcript Evaluation of all international degrees sent directly to SOPHAS - World Education Services is the preferred provider.

If granted admission to the program, SPHHS must receive additional documents to request an I-20 for study at GW. Please review the Immigration Document Requirements and submit these materials at any time during the application process.

Applicants Holding A Non-Student U.S. Visa

Applicants on a non-student Visa (Ex: H4, G1) are sponsored by an agency or organization not related to GW. Please confirm with the U.S. Department of State that you are permitted to study in the U.S. on your current Visa status.

If you plan to keep your current Visa status, no additional documentation is required. Please indicate your current Visa status on your SOPHAS application.

Applicants with US Permanent Residency Status

Permanent residents are non-US citizens legally within the United States who have applied and been approved for residency. Prospective students with pending applications for residency may apply as permanent residents, but cannot enroll at SPHHS until temporary or permanent residency is approved.

Before being reviewed for admission, applicants must submit:

  • A Course-By-Course Transcript Evaluation of all international degrees sent directly to SOPHAS - World Education Services is the preferred provider.

The TOEFL or IELTS is not required for Permanent Residents, but the Admissions Committee reserves the right to request proof of language proficiency. Permanent Residents are eligible for a GRE waiver if they currently hold a graduate degree when applying to a master's degree or graduate certificate at SPHHS.

To send GRE Scores to GW, please use Institution Code 5268. TOEFL Scores must be sent to Institution Code 5688.

For detailed information on testing waivers, please review our Language Proficiency and International Testing Requirements.
