Delta Omega Honorary Society In Public Health - Omega Chapter

About Delta Omega

Delta Omega is the honor society for graduate studies in public health. The society was founded in 1924 and currently includes 58 chapters throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Membership in Delta Omega reflects the dedication of an individual to quality in the field of public health and to protecting and advancing the health of all people. To learn more, visit the national Delta Omega website.

About the Omega Chapter

Since The George Washington University's Omega chapter was established in 1995, we have inducted over 250 members. We are very proud of our membership and consistently seeking ways to further engage them in our chapter and the GW community.

One of our most exciting activities is partnering with The GW Medical Center and SPHHS on the annual GWUMC Research Day. This event brings together students, staff, faculty, and affiliate researchers for a one-day symposium to present their findings. Delta Omega members are recruited to serve as judges of student posters and oral presentations.

We are currently exploring other ways to engage our membership, including networking events and community service activities. If you are a member of Delta Omega, and would like to get more involved, we would love to hear from you!

Eligibility, Selection Criteria, and Nominations

Each spring, Delta Omega inducts new members from three groups: (1) SPHHS
graduate degree students who have completed at least 31 credit hours if
master's student or 40 credit hours if doctoral student; (2) SPHHS alumni
actively engaged in public health work; and (3) SPHHS faculty. Individuals
from all disciplines within the School of Public Health and Health Services
are eligible. All candidates must also demonstrate a potential for making
significant contributions to the field of public health.

Nominations are typically accepted in the early spring. A notification will be posted on the SPHHS listserv and this website with information and dates for Delta Omega
information sessions and the due-date for application submission.

SPHHS Graduate Students - Graduate student applicants must have a cumulative
grade point average equal to or greater than 3.80 and demonstrated
leadership in professional and community activities within the field of
public health. Students may self-nominate by submitting a nomination package
including one copy of: a letter of recommendation reflecting each of the
above stated criteria; a 1-page personal statement; and a resume (we will
pull a copy of your transcript). Your letter of recommendation need not be
from a Delta Omega member.

SPHHS Alumni - Alumni must demonstrate leadership in professional and
community activities within the field of public health that would serve as a
model for future graduates of the school. The selection committee generally
focuses most on activities and accomplishments since graduation, so very
recent graduates will not typically be as competitive. Nomination must be
made by a current DO member. Alumni are to submit a nomination package
including one copy of: a letter of recommendation/nomination from a current
DO member; a 1-page personal statement related to professional and community
activities; and a CV/resume.

SPHHS Faculty - Faculty members are evaluated based on outstanding public health performance in teaching, research, and community service and leadership within and outside of the SPHHS. Nomination must be made by a current DO member. Faculty members are to submit a nomination package including one copy of: a letter of recommendation/nomination from a current DO member; and a CV.
